Google Ads call tracking down to the keyword

Find out which campaigns, keywords and landing pages make people pick up the phone, then send those calls back to Google Ads so bidding learns from real enquiries.

A call in Calltrail: how the caller found the business, a summary of the conversation, auto tags and a suggested lead stage

Why clicks aren't the number that matters

For plumbers, roofers, solicitors, clinics and most local services, the best enquiries come in by phone. If Google Ads only sees form fills, it bids for the people who fill in forms. Your cost per lead looks worse than it is, and budget drifts away from the keywords that actually ring.

Call tracking closes that gap: you see the calls each keyword brings, and so does Google.

How it works

  • A visitor clicks your ad. The Calltrail snippet notes the click ID, campaign and keyword from the landing page.
  • They are shown a tracking number from the client's pool that nobody else is using right now.
  • When that number rings, Calltrail knows which visit, click and keyword it belongs to, and records the call.
  • Calltrail looks up the click in your Google Ads account for the ad group and the search terms behind it.
  • The call is sent to Google Ads as a conversion against that click, using the rules you choose.

What you get on every call

  • Campaign, keyword and landing page.
  • Answered, missed or voicemail, with ring time and talk time.
  • The recording, a transcript and a short summary of what the caller wanted.
  • Tags such as “Quote request”, added automatically when the caller says certain words.
  • The lead's stage, so you can count booked jobs, not just calls.

Microsoft Ads, GA4 and Meta too

The same calls can be sent to Microsoft Advertising as offline conversions, to GA4 as events, and to Meta through the Conversions API, so every platform you buy media on learns from the phone.

Questions people ask

Isn't Google's own call tracking enough?

Google's forwarding numbers count calls from call extensions and can count calls from your site, but they only report inside Google Ads. They don't record the call, tell you if it was answered, show the same caller across Facebook and organic, or give the client a call log. Calltrail does all of that and still sends the conversion to Google Ads.

Can I see the search term, not just the keyword?

Yes, as far as Google allows. With your Google Ads account connected, Calltrail looks up the click behind each call: the keyword, match type, ad group and campaign, and the search terms that triggered that keyword that day. When Google reports a single search, that was the caller's; when it reports several, you see the shortlist. Google reports clicks a few hours late, so these fill in shortly after the call.

How are calls counted as conversions?

You choose: every call, answered calls (optionally only those over a set length), the first call from a new caller, or a lead reaching a stage such as qualified or booked. Each is sent against the click that started the visit, so it lines up with the right campaign and keyword.

What about people who call from the ad itself?

Put a fixed Calltrail number on your call assets and those calls are tracked to Google Ads too, with the recording and outcome like any other call.

Will the conversions work with smart bidding?

Yes. They arrive in Google Ads as offline conversions tied to the original click, which Target CPA and Maximise Conversions can optimise toward.
